Ok...so I LOVE JR Ward's books. Devoted Fan. But I have had issues deviating from The BDB series. I read reviews on the Fallen Angels...and didn't like what I read. Well...glad when I FINALLY took the plunge (after almost 3 years of looking at excerpts from a distance). I was not disappointed. It is a very good stand alone series. I got completely sucked into the characters and their drama - in a GOOD way. I breezed through the whole series in about a week. I am on the last 50% of the LAST one (book 6) and I'm already having Detox pains. I thoroughly enjoyed the battle between good and evil. Heaven and hell. The Creator (loved the different options of that belief) and the Devil, Savior and Archangels. I loved hearing snippets of intel on Caldwell, NY from an outsider's POV. And even more fun seeing a few of my favorite BDB peeps pop up for a cameo. Ward delivers a rewarding mental challenge here as she does in most of her books. The psychological evolution and transformation of the characters are where Ward excels. I do admit until the 3rd book I kept waiting for the so called "disappointment" that some of the other reviews swore would happen...NOT! There are so many reasons to read the whole series...surprises, twists, details, developments etc. I couldn't even sleep through book 4 and 5. Oh...and also don't fall for "when will Jim and Sissy happen cause I'm so tired of waiting - (whine, simper)"...ok so let it happen when the writer wants/needs/plans it to happen for the story she is telling. It was worth the wait. It ALL is worth the freakin wait. PS...Love to Dog. You'll know what I mean if you read till book 4.Tags : Covet (Fallen Angels) [J.R. Ok so I went ahead a reread this one since I was not up to date on Goodreads on the first go around. I have to say that as a huge supporting fan of Ms. Ward, this new series did not disappoint.
Firstly, I would like to comment on the setting of this series. For anyone that has been following the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, this one runs parallel in the same world although they have separate plots. I liked that the Fallen Angels are visiting the same places that I have come to know and love. I was able to explore more in the world of Caldwell and expand within the same universe. For those that Have not delved into the BDB books, that is totally fine! Don't worry about being lost, but beware you may be sucked in!
Alright onto the book in question, Covet! I have to say that I was nervous diverging from the vampires that I have come to passionately love. With the excellent writing that Ward offers her readers, I was willing to make the move and dig into this new series. We are introduced to Jim, a man steeped in mystery, who finds himself on a whole new path in life and it is a pick it up and run or the world comes to an end type of race.
Readers are off and running from the turn of the first page and boy is it a race. I definitely felt invested in these characters and could not read fast enough to see what happened next. It is up to Jim to win this battle against good and evil and each assignment offers a tick in the win or lose column.
In this book we are introduced to Vin and Marie-Terese, two that seemingly do not fit together at all. It is up to Jim to straighten out the lives of these two wayward spirits and help them on their way to the bright and shiny gates that lead to a happily ever after. Working to figure out the rules of the game on the fly, Jim makes mistakes and has to quickly deal with the consequences as he tries to win the round.
I would definitely recommend this series to anyone that is looking for a whirl-wind trip through the footrace of good and evil. Be prepared to clench tight to the book and take every available minute to keep reading. This is a great addition to the writings of Ward and am happy to say that I am moving on to the next book in the series!
Jim Heron is a loner. Mysterious, quiet, a former assassin who likes his own company. Yet on his latest construction job he seems to have acquired two guys whom he can’t shake and who appear ready to become his best friends whether he wants them or not. Then an on-the-job accident brings him into the sphere of his boss Vin diPietro and a glimpse into Jim’s new vocation and his first assignment.
Vin diPietro is a billionaire. He came up the hard way through hard work and a single goal, to accumulate as much wealth as he could and was totally relentless in whatever he had do to gain it. Vin also has a secret, he once saw dead people before they met their untimely deaths. Detesting this “gift” Vin inadvertently traded his soul to rid himself of it. It would now be up to Jim and his two ‘buddies’ to help Vin find his way back to redeem his soul.
*** Having been a huge fan of Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series, I was anxious to see what her Fallen Angel series was all about. And wow, what did I find? It was taking place in Coldwell, NY, the very home of the Brotherhood series. No, we didn’t run into any of the ‘brothers’ but I was happy to see Trey - one of Revenge’s old bodyguards play a small but prominent role in the story. I had happy feet dancing around over this fact.
I was carefully drawn into the story pretty much not knowing where it was going as it centered around Jim seeming like a normal type of construction worker; and Vin seeming like one very wealthy and powerful billionaire. All kinds of normal and then after a chapter or two - the story took off into a kind of paranormal world of angels and demons!
Ward filled COVET with a plethora of secondary characters who to my mind were all significant to the story and more than just fill-ins to beef up a story or add to a word count. Building a carefully laid stage is one of the things that I’ve come to expect with any of Ward’s stories and even though when reading one might wonder why Ward spends time on introducing or bringing in so many other players, in the end one generally finds they are all crucial to her plotting.
Bottom line What I loved? Everything! From the wonderful performance by Eric Dove, to the fast action, the fully fleshed out characters, and especially the four white-clothed ‘croquet-players’ (spoiler - but you will see what I mean!). However, most of all, I loved the transformation of the all the leads! Another series I fully intend to get caught up in! Bravo Ms. Ward life just gets better and better every time I pick up a new book or series by you!
