I started reading this because of the art on th app store ,spacecraft and dinosaurs how can you go wrong . first off let me start by saying I did enjoy this book I t has a lot of really well thought out science fiction theory, likable characters ,and ideas which I assume are furthered in the next books. I just want to tell those out there who are like myself and are looking for a dinosaur book to fill the void after reading most of the ones on Amazon, Although a good read this book is about planetary exploration, alien bases ,secrets and trust. Dinosaurs are only a very ,very small part of this story ,they may appear more later in the series but I have not read them yet. Just to clarify this not a dinosaur book it is a space travel book.Tags : Boundary [Eric Flint, Ryk E. Spoor] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. EF has penned a SyFy Novel About an extra-reprisals visit to Earth 65 Million Years ago. Once the info was shared with others the discovery leaped forward and the U.S. wanted total anonymity. The discoveries made by the astronauts were shared by them with the rest of the world. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Delicious science fiction. Reasonably near-future, realistic technology, paleontologists, scientists, and engineers as main characters... I adore this book. It's everything I love in science fiction. Alien artifacts, exploration, and the obvious danger of working in space. Explanations of the technology itself, and how it works. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
You will like this book better if you don't like your fiction dark, "realistic," or "gritty." I put parenthesis around two of those because the book's view of human nature may not be "unrealistic." I have always thought that a dark picture of human nature was more realistic but lately I have realized that there are more bad people in one chapter of, for instance, _A Game of Thrones_ than I have met in my entire life. Really terrible people may not be as common as one thinks and this book has very few of them.
Easily the worst person in the book has been dead for several years. He is very important to the book because of his influence on one of the main characters but his influence is a positive thing, not to make her more like him. Then there's an academic who is a jealous and short-sighted jerk, but he has only a bit of page-time and is easily thwarted and there are some beaurocrats who are annoying but none of them, none of the living bad guys in the book, violate what Heinlein said when he said "Your enemy is not a villain in his own eyes."
The other people in this book have their flaws and their quirks but they are generally good people. I didn't find this a flaw.
The books tone is sunny but there are certainly enough difficulties thrown into the paths of the characters. The science tends toward the hard; the version of the Solar System used is realistic, not the one with a habitable Mars and Venus.
There are quite a few laughs to be had but the story is serious enough to support the novel-length treatment. Just a great read.
A large percentage of this novel is hard science fiction filled with technical details. Whether the authors will seem prescient or boringly dated in a decade or so remains to be seen. The rest of the book is an entertaining story of dinosaurs, space aliens, paleontology and space exploration as well as the travails of one Joe Buckley. Buckley who, in many science fiction stories, is often killed in creative ways meets many a spectacular crisis in this novel. The characters are interesting as is the sometimes predictable story. If you are not acquainted with Buckley's story you may want to search Joe Buckley Baen on the web.
Of the Sci-Fi I've read, and I've read right much, this story is rather unique. The plot is exceptional, the characterization first rate making the story an engaging read. It's only drawback for me was it seems overly technical which slows the pace a bit, but then I found it so fascinating in its credibility, it was hard to put down. I still don't understand motes and 'fairy dust' but I was so drawn into the plot that is a minor issue. I'd write more, but it would give away the plot, an unpardonable sin.
I do highly recommend this book if you like Sci-Fi!
This book has long-drawn out set-up, which makes it fairly boring to read through. I have found myself skipping several pages at a time to get back to something like the storyline. In general, I like Eric Flint; but I had resisted getting this novel for a while now and now I know why..... But it was offered free on kindle, so why not take a chance on it? If it's not still free, just borrow it from a friend or the library. It's got an interesting premise and hopefully the series will improve, since all of the set-up is in this novel. Nothing really exciting happens, even the dinosaur/BEMMIE discovery is downplayed; it's not 1632-type material.....
This novel was a disappointing flop, and the only book associated with Mr. Flint that I couldn't finish reading. The premise is very good, the development and execution sorely lacking. I wanted to like it, and kept waiting for it to get better, unfortunately it never did. After 25 percent literary couldn't endure it anymore.
